Well, add that to my list. "Toby Off His Leash" is one from my on-going puppet series. I truly love the marionette and have a kiln in which I have started creating marionettes.
My fascination is multifaceted. They are beautiful in their creation and when handled by their handler come to life. Most are very primitive in style and quite eerie, the original stories were also quite brutal. So one can question are they really for play. If I were to hang one in a child's room, they would probably wish for it to be removed, and quickly. But I still marvel at the appearance.
"Toby Off the Leash" references one of the most famous puppet show narratives, that of Punch and Judy. It is also the images of Punch and Judy that are rendered here with the dog Toby. In the same manner in which I work, I find it important to use the negative coloration established to work through the positive imagery to create an overall harmony. The drab greens and khaki yellow/browns dominate. I love the fine strings that remind us that they are still puppets and add the vertical linear quality. The mat choice is a Khaki linen on the outside and sonora on the inside. The mat measurement is 5" top and sides and a bottom mat of 5 1/2". The bottom mat should be larger for visual weight. The frame is a narrow, silver, 3/4" front profile frame with red undertones. The frame projects 1 1/2" from the wall and is painted a raw umber coloration. This p [
