Description: The usual behaviour of these creatures inspired me to paint Bats. There seems to be a mysterious pattern to their movements and they are not well loved except by their own. In this painting a sheath of light from the radiant moon reveals the carved, magnificent subterranean caverns that house these beleaguered creatures. As offbeat and repulsive as they seem to some, nature offers sacred refuge to the misshapen, the outcast, the blind (only an old wife's tale, bats really can see).
Bold and vivid, this painting is the most heavily stylized of my cave series. The colours, rust, brown, black and gray, are saturated to emphasize patterns that naturally occur through erosion and geological upheavals.
