| Nancy Bossert | | | See more art by Nancy Bossert | | What is mouth blown pottery and how is it made? | | | What you know about clay is that it is elastic. make a simple coil and it stretches, correct? well, if you prepare your clay properly it will accept your air like a balloon. I blow it with my mouth on the clay (I clean well after the process :)) and the clay piece must be corked with a piece of clay immediately so the air does not escape. Then the clay is beaten into a shape. I keep them pretty round. As the clay starts to get leather hard the pot must be opened or it will break - since the clay shrinks and the air occupies the same space the resistance builds or pressure. You can hear the rush or air when released! Great science project. I sometimes add my semi precious stones to these also, and even stitch in fibers. There is definitely a carry over in all my variety of works. | | | | What is one of the most personally meaningful pieces you've created and what does it mean to you? | | | Every piece created is meaningful. I truly get lost in my art. It is absolutely the best medicine, I have been blessed to have such a wonderful occupation, passion, life, etc. When an individual commissions a piece of art. I get so involved in wanting it to be everything to them. I not only look at photographs, but I listen to their stories. Not that I want a client to cry, but I have had so many clients cry and share hugs with me and many wonderful friendships have developed, because of my drive to want to connect with the art. | | | | Is it difficult to shift between several different mediums or does it help you to take a break from time to time? | | | I could do art all day long and must look like I do :) A woman possessed! I have a wonderful family, grown children, dog (Carmine), cat (Lazer), lots of fish, huge yard and house to take care of. Teach college, do portfolio lectures and teach privately (20-24 students). However, my main business is that of a Fine Artist. I find that if I do three figurative in a row I would tend to trivialize the subject matter. It would be come more of a pattern or mechanical process. If you really look at everything that I do you can see the tie together, color ,balance, texture, tone. | | | | What are some qualities one needs to be a successful artist? | | | To be successful: sense of humor, don't give up, no that there are no mistakes just wonderful opportunities, keep on top of your tasks/ books/galleries, listen to your clients, know your heart, love your family more and everything will be great. | | |
