When did you start painting?
My earliest memories of painting are a Grade One Three Little Pigs project for the local agricultural fair. My teacher, Mrs. Donaldson, bless her heart, must have made me repaint my piece a dozen times! So, I guess you can say I started my professional career at six years of age.
What inspires your work?
I've often wished that I was more inspired by the physical landscape, but it doesn't seem to work that way for me. It's the human landscape, faces and what they tell us. I’m irresistibly drawn to early Renaissance Art and Russian and Greek Icons.
Painting full-time and running a home sounds like two full-time jobs, how do you balance them and do you schedule time to paint?
While my family was young, I had years where I didn't paint at all. These were formative years as domestic goddess, the kitchen and garden were my palette paints! It wasn't until two and a half years ago that I took a much needed leave from my job that I realized that I simply had to return to painting full time. I began to work day and night, it was slow at first, finding my painter's voice, but it's OK now.
What would you like for people to know about your paintings or about you as an artist?
I hope that the viewer is somehow touched by something they see in the piece. What I may see in it is less important to me. I’ve got this little gift of art and here I am, able to paint and pay a few bills – it’s all incredibly amazing to me!
Is there anything you would like to share with young artists or artists who are just starting to sell their work?
To all the artists, young or old, find your style and work and work. Be ready to continually change and learn without losing your artist's voice. Talk to other artists, learn the marketing and business end of art in our technical age. You have to. The days are gone when an artist can just paint.
