Although getting his college degrees in mathematics, Stephen Bitel minored in art, developed his first roll of film at about the age of 7 and has been into photography ever since. Over the years he has done photographic work in the areas of advertising, portraiture and event recording. He has published in “Peterson’s Photographic” and “Modern Photography”, was the primary photographer for a Police Athletic League magazine, was a first prize winner in the annual North Shore University Hospital photography contest (back when they still accepted B & W) as well as having a print (“Boy On A Net”) on display at the “African American Museum” in Hempstead New York as a result of a contest held by the Long Island Institute of Photography. Steve has had shows on Long Island and also in Woodstock, New York, including a photographic documentation of “Resurrection City” during the “Poor People’s March on Washington”. This collection will be shown at the African American Museum in January of 2008 around the time of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
Steve studied at the International Center of Photography (ICP ) with John Loengard and Yale Joel, the photo editor of Life magazine at the time and a Life staff photographer respectively.
A primary photographic interest of his has always been in abstract images rendered through reflections as well as the colors and textures of ordinary things enhanced by the effects of lighting and composition .... the foundation of all photography. [
