Soraya is of South Indian descent born under the political regime of apartheid South Africa. She immigrated with her family to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada when she was 12 years old. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Alberta, Soraya had the opportunity of travel and study. She studied art for 3 years in Atlanta, Georgia. As well, she studied privately under Master Dorai -a sculptor schooled in the ancient art of Chola Bronzes.
Soraya recently completed a 6 week solo exhibition at the Nina Haggerty Center called Shakti: Homage to the Indian Woman. The show focused on violence toward women in Indian culture while providing avenues for change and empowerment. The show was well-received by the public and press and over a third of the 26 pieces on exhibition were sold.
Soraya primarily works in acrylics and collage while occasionally using mixed media. She is greatly influeunced by the culture of India as well as the feminine perspective,. Also, African masks and sculpture as well as Chola bronzes continue to be a source of inspiration.
Soraya currently lives in Virginia with her husband where she enjoys running, reading, painting, travel and photography. [
