Emerging as one of the continent's brightest stars, Kathilu's work champions the talent and ability of a self-taught artist. Alex relies primarily upon his natural artistic capacity to bring his creative vision to fruition. However, he also draws upon his life experiences, which have afforded him the opportunity to be mentored and inspired by professional artists. A source of passion and challenge, Alex cherishes the process of painting and is in constant labor to perfect his craft, which results in refreshing, cutting-edge material produced through media and stylistic experimentation.
Currently, Kathilu is exploring the world of Jazz through oil--one brush stroke at a time. This unique composite of color and contrast attempts to capture the mystifying and abstract essence of the genre and some of its seminal characters. Why Jazz you might ask? Besides being a tremendous source of inspiration, Jazz has origins in West African folk music, which was brought to the Americas via the Transatlantic Slave Trade where it fused with European popular and light classical music of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Because of this history, Alex discovered a great cultural connection to the music and has developed a body of work that asks the question: If you could see "The Soul of Jazz," what would it look like?
Hoping to evoke, instigate and inspire, "The Soul of Jazz" is guaranteed to strike a chord with almost anyone, Even those who are unfamililar with the music or the artist. Feel free to experience what happens when brush strokes meet blue notes......(Arif .S)
