Robert Selvaggio was born in Florida in the early 70's. His mother, holding a degree in art, was a big influence early on. "She got her degree in commercial art from Florida State University and did a lot of work as a freelance artist while I was growing up. As a result, art was a big part of Robert's childhood. "I was always drawing or tracing something".
Equally fascinated with music, he made a guitar for his 7th grade shop class project. Robert's uncle was a working musician at the time and let Robert take home one of his real guitars to play around with. From that moment on, music took center stage as the dominant creative force in his life, art would eventually take a back seat. Three years later, he wrote his first song and joined his first band. After doing a ton a gigs and a few demo recordings, the band, as all bands eventually do, broke up. After graduating high school, he decided to pursue music full time doing solo gigs at restaurants and bars and joining several more local bands. To pay the bills, he worked construction and did a short stint at a restaurant as a prep cook. Eventually he found himself working full time as an on air radio personality.
Robert worked in radio for about 5 years, all the while doing any gig (musically) that came his way. He saved his money and eventually bought a four-track cassette recording machine. He spent hours alone recording his own songs. All the while not realizing he was laying the foundation for what was to come. He eventually upgraded his recording equipment to record an album for the band he was in at the time. "I think it sold about 300 copies!" Although the sales were less than desirable, the record did garner a lot of attention for the way it sounded. "I suddenly started getting calls from other bands to produce/record their records."
One thing led to another and Robert found himself recording full time. Between 1998 and 2000 three of the bands he produced demos with went on to sign major label deals. In 2000 he moved to Los Angeles and continues to this day to record, edit and produce music. He's worked with everyone from Eagle Eye Cherry and Jewel to socialburn and Puddle Of Mudd.
In 2006 Robert decided to take a break from recording others to start production on his own record. More importantly, he has started painting again. As a result, he's now actively showing in galleries and shops in and around the Los Ageles area. Between his music career and a new career as an artist, Robert expects 2007 to be pretty busy year. When asked to choose, "Between art and music? There's no way, from now on I'm doing both".
ARTIST STATEMENT
Most of my artwork is inspired by my other two passions: music and science. Intentionally or unintentionally, I inevitably end up mostly exploring these two subjects.
