Because I was born and raised in southern California I attribute my palette of intense colors to that region. Whether working in oils or in opaque gouache watercolors, my pigments stay close to the sun. I prefer to apply a coat of pure color (imprimatura) to the white ground with very little, if any, over painting. Cool, dark tones which generally recede are frequently applied to frontal areas, while warm and lighter tones often are used for distant shapes bringing them forward creating a flat format.
