My paintings are interesting men, women, and children I have seen, but usually did not get to know. From hundreds of digital photos taken as I travel, an occasional image is brought to my laptop for painting directly from the screen – usually as part of a crowd scene, group, portrait, or as just a face.
I try to captures peoples’ feelings and interactions with subtlety and humor, often tied into an underlying back story. Using a few lightfast pigments, my paintings are prized for their compelling colors and strong composition.
Born and educated in England, I came to Southern California in the mid-1950's. Retiring from over fifty years in marketing and sales for high tech industries, I started serious painting in 1996.
Largely self taught in the art world, by living in beautiful Santa Barbara, I am lucky to be surrounded by talented world famous artists, many of whom have generously given their time to help me grow.
After starting in pen & ink, I evolved first into watercolor, then gouache, and more recently into oil. I have spent years painting outdoors en plein-air, and in the studio figure drawing and portrait painting.
My artwork is to be found in many private collections, Santa Barbara area galleries, and elsewhere.
A former President of Santa Barbara and Goleta Art Associations, I am a Member of Santa Barbara Studio Artists, Los Padres Watercolor Society, SCAPE, an Artist Patron of the California Art Club, and a founder/director of Santa Barbara Visual Arts Alliance. [
