CD Zapping? Is it art?
I found a website where CD's are zapped in a microwave oven. The results are kind of beautiful and interesting.
Generally, I try not to think about what is art and what isn't. I don't think it is my place to say, I am allowed to decide what I like and don't like. This is different, you take a mass produced object and use a tool without any skill to change it, I don't think this is art.
I know a woman who takes pieces of metal and uses a machine to stamp patterns (with great skill) on them, that is art I'm sure. I have seen machines where put in a penny and 3 quarters, turn the crank and a penny is squished into a shape, that is not art. Clearly zapping CD's is different than pottery that you make and put into fire to have a unique effect in the glazing.
Is an meteor you find on the ground art? No one manipulated it, so maybe it is an interesting object? I don't think a meteor is art.
What do you think, are zapped CD's art or not?

I was looking at your current "Artist" of the month and for some reason, I just couldnt see it as Art. Science...yes....Art....no. They simply run your DNA and then put it into a computer that prints it out in colors. I could see how this might appeal to techies. It is kinda cool looking. But it simply is not Art. And I wonder how you can know if it is really your DNA. Might they just have a random computer program that spits out colorful pretties that look nice in a frame? To me it is on par with nuking C.D.s. NOT ART AT ALL...Very surprised that Boundless Gallery has chosen this company as "artist of the month". Loved last month's Artist.
We are in the business of trying new things and DNA11 is one of them. Some of the things we try are successful and some are not. I have written about some of our failings here and maybe DNA11 will be one of them?
Strange as it maybe, DNA11 sold almost as many pieces as we did last year. They are going to hit the geek magazine's best Christmas gift guides this year and it made some sense to try to capitalize on that PR.
I'm hoping we sell a bunch of them and it helps keep the lights on. If not, we will be back to the grind with our original artists in 30 days. I have made worse mistakes recently, hopefully this will not be to painful.
Thanks for the comment, your input is being heard and helps guide what we do.
Yes, I have no problem with this being regarded as art. The definition of what is art moves on and has always been challenged by new work. Fir example, back in the 1950s people were saying that Jackson Pollock wasn't an artist because his brushes didn't touch the canvas. I am willing (now) to accpet that anything anyone presents as art is art. Whether I like it or not or whether it is any good is another matter. I think evaluating art is much more productive than worrying about what is and what isn't art.
