The Art of Ron Mueck

If you think you've never seen Ron Mueck's work before, you're probably wrong. The Australian-born, London-based sculptor was a new name to me, but a Google search revealed that he was in the creature workshop with Jim Henson making one of my favorite childhood films, Labyrinth. ;) Use that Google search to read about his story, its a good one.

Here are some photos of his artwork from Ebaumsworld.com

Thanks go to Todd's friend Stacy K for forwarding this interesting story.

Hi there

Yes I have seen Ron Mueck’s work previously. It was in (I think) 1997 at the Royal Academy's "SENSATION" exhibition. We had been assigned to go along and review the show by our then course director A.W. (no his first name wasn’t Adolf!!). At that time, I was doing a post grad printmaking course at a well renowned art school near to where the most famous world tennis tournaments are annually held.

I saw Ron Mueck’s piece called "Dead Dad" which was a bit of a glib title for a rather moving piece considering the timbre of the exhibition otherwise.

I also liked the Myra Hindley piece by Marcus Harvey, which was a huge black and white monochromatic iconic portrait of the infamous moors murderer Myra Hindley.

It was made up of children s hand prints which ~ I imagine the parents and relatives of the murdered children found offensive but it was a good piece, because whilst being conceptual, it was none the less emotionally charged.
The thing with Ron Mueck’s piece i.e., Dead Dad, was that it was smaller than real life size and yet totally realistic and even with the hairs in the nose - it was awfully sad and pathetic.
