Newspapers and Advertising in San Francisco

I was in the financial district of San Francisco, CA recently and noticed they were switching out the newspaper racks, with mega racks that hold 10 papers. Now why are they doing that? Surely the newspapers wouldn't be willing to pay for new racks, when they have perfectly good ones now. Is it because there is a big spot for advertising on the back? Is they how they are paying for it? Maybe there is so much money in SF that they can force businesses to put up these cleaner and nicer solutions?

It was interesting to see the quality of advertising in the Bay Area. The roadside signs that are TV's, to the cars completely decorated with advertising. There isn't enough parking, but there sure are plenty of signs.

Saw some nice art too. It isn't Boston or the other big East Coast cities, that started collecting art long before SF was a city, but the art scene is sure vibrant.

I think I'm getting pretty good at ignoring advertising, but I don't watch TV, so that it makes it a lot easier.

My budding 3 year old artist

The weather has turned fine here in Southern Illinois and my 3 year old has become a sidewalk chalk artist. Here he is putting the finishing touches on his self portrait while dressed as a pirate. His sword is in his right hand (our left), dagger in belt and he is drawing in his hook.

Hours of his time are being put into lots of different kinds of art projects. More then my other kids ever did.

I wonder if this means something or is it just a phase?

What do you think, Geek or Artist or something else? We know where the genes are pointing.

Small Mention in the NY Post the other day

BoundlessGallery.com had a small mention at the end of the NY Post article. We have had bigger write ups, but it is always nice to be mentioned among the leaders. They didn't even call us for a quote.

Our fragile world of computers

I like this article from Business Week about what happens when computer networks go down.

At BoundlessGallery.com we are hosting our servers at a company called InetU. They have been superior in the uptime and quality of their support for us. We choose them for this reason, their reputation is as either the best place to host your webpage, or one of the best.

I know companies that have a T1 line, a few servers, a support person, and fancy power solutions. We figure that it costs less then a T1 Line to host our whole server solution. We can spend the extra money on having more programmers.

When you are running a 100% online company, you read articles about possibilities of huge internet failures and it isn't a good feeling. On the other hand, you read lots of stuff in the press about the crash of the North American economic system. We haven't seen it yet and I'm guessing we aren't going to see it anytime soon. I guess there are worse things then not having internet for a few days. I could finish a piece of furniture if it went down for a week, that would be kind of fun.

Your comments are always welcome.
