BOUNDLESSGALLERY.COM NAMES JUNE ARTIST OF THE MONTH
CARBONDALE, IL, JUNE 1, 2005: BoundlessGallery.com is proud to announce McGarren Flack as its artist of the month for June, 2005. Flack was chosen out of a pool of more than 500 artists on the BoundlessGallery.com website and his work will be featured on the gallery's homepage found at www.BoundlessGallery.com.
“I don't expect to get awards for anything I do.” said Flack. “I just love painting the things I see each day, the normal every day things.”
His subjects mainly consist of the human form. Although, he also takes pleasure in painting landscapes and still lifes because of the way light drifts over the objects. When he paints a figure he strives to represent that individual to the greatest accuracy. So when opportunities present themselves to paint a portrait, he will be able to capture the portrayer with a keen eye and gorgeous brush strokes.
As the middle of five children growing up in Salt Lake City, Flack showed no more interest in art than other children until high school before stepping away from the art world again.
A mission trip to Washington D.C. Led him to the national Art Museum and a traveling show for John Singer Sargent.
“I was in awe, the whole time I looked at his paintings I was amazed that someone could paint so accurately but still make it look like a painting.” said Flack. “From that day on I wanted to paint like John Singer Sargent.”
The impact of Sargent's work on Flack is easily apparent by looking at Flack's collection of work. He forgoes the surreal and the abstract to paint what he sees.
“It is the simple every day things that I love to paint because I think we don't take advantage of them. How many times does a regular person sit down on the grass just to feel how prickly or soft it is?” said Flack. “I love the little things. I love tasting, smelling, touching, anything that has to do with our senses. I love it all.”
Much of Flack's work is representative of his life and the lives of the people around him, one of his more personal paintings titled “Alone” comes from a conversation with a model who was feeling depressed because she was having a hard time meeting someone. Flack made the painting to show that regardless of physical appearance everyone feels alone at some point in their lives and it is ok.
“I hope that people won't just walk past my paintings and go 'oh, that's nice.' I want them to question what is going on, and how does it relate to them.” said Flack. “In short, I want people to appreciate life and to live it to it's fullest purpose; whatever that may be.”
