BOUNDLESSGALLERY.COM NAMES JULY ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Carbondale, IL, July 1, 2005: Tellis Savalas Coleman was selected as the July 2005 artist of the month for BoundlessGallery.com from the nearly 600 artists represented in their online gallery.
Growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, Coleman felt different and distant from the people around him, so he turned to creating art and writing as a means of self-expression. He first started to experiment with cameras and photography around the age of ten and his fascination for creating images grew along with his love for expressing himself visually.
“To know my art is to know me.” said Coleman, “I am a very introverted person and you would probably find out more about me by looking deeply into my art. My works are a compilation of myself.”
Coleman has embraced the Internet as a marketing tool and an avenue for the sale of his work; although, he is quick to point out that simply posting your work to a website is not the secret to being discovered as an artist.
"My work is introduced to an entirely new generation of art buyers and collectors. There are no borders or boundaries. Some people are under the impression that marketing over the Internet is somehow different from marketing in traditional means; it is not different, it is just another alternative.” said Coleman. “The Internet is more ammo to promote with, that is all. It is neither the beginning nor the end of a marketing plan; you still have to make yourself and your work known.”
The creation process for Coleman can be labor intensive, with some pieces taking up to a year to complete.
“Guardian was created when coming back from my first ever trip to [Las] Vegas.” said Coleman. “It took about a year to create because I had to tie all the elements that I wanted to show together without it being so obvious. I was still using film and scanning my images, now that I use digital capture, the process is a tad faster, but not by much.”
Family plays a large role in Coleman's work; one of his pieces Death of the Artist was created when life seemed too trivial and without purpose, this was before his daughters were born. Another of Coleman's favorite pieces is GEN-3001 which was created with the birth of his first child.
“I am a father and a husband. My family is my life and inspiration for all that I do. I believe in a strong commitment to family above anything else.” said Coleman.
