From Furniture to Fine Art
Jun 1, 2006

Sketching and drawing were ways to pass the time when Sigmoune Ferdinand Velasco, who also goes by Sigfred, was a child. Although he tried to avoid becoming a starving artist as a profession the hobby stuck around. His colorful, abstract style has earned Sigfred Artist of the Month honors on BoundlessGallery.com one of the leading online art sellers. “I don’t think I ever had a chance to think about what I really wanted to do even when I was growing up,” says Sigfred. “My Mother wanted me to be in the U.S. Air Force while my Dad wanted me to be like him, a furniture designer.” Although he originally planned to study the Culinary Arts, Sigfred moved culinary training to the back burner, receiving his degree in Furniture Designing from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. The Hawaiian born Velasco moved to the Philippines after getting married and now helps his father to run their furniture shop. While he still enjoys cooking and is asked to do all of the cooking for family gatherings and special events he felt a course of education related to the furniture business would be more helpful. He began his recent career in art by picking up an empty canvas and painting an abstract to display in his own room. From there he started trying different techniques and eventually began offering his paintings for sale alongside the furniture he designed. Sigfred says he is working to master his painting and has won several awards in art competitions. “Through the help of my friends and other art collectors and galleries, I have been able to showcase my works and had several one-man shows and group exhibits locally and in other countries as well,” said Sigfred. Thanks to these sales as well as online sales venues Sigfred is starting to build a worldwide audience. His work is hanging in restaurants in the Philippines, on apartment walls in Los Angeles and has sold to individuals in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Germany, and Hawaii, California, Georgia in the U.S. “Through online selling, boundaries are no limit, even though I am selling here in the Philippines a customer or art collector can reach me any time even though they are miles away.” said Sigfred. “The opportunity for my work to get further recognition is just a click or email away.” The inspiration for Sigfred’s abstract and landscape paintings comes from his admiration for an “Unstable and Imperfect Life”. “Like how people in suburbs like in Metro Manila live and take this living condition and can be grateful in some ways,” says Sigfred, “It is an impression of beauty but is melancholy of human life and nature.” Selling furniture has made Sigfred very aware of the many different needs of his customers and he recognizes the demand for different styles of artwork to match their homes and businesses. “Our customers have different kinds of needs for their home,” says Sigfred. “Though I would say that landscape, cityscape and abstract are my favorite subjects to paint.”
