| description: Art quilter Juanita Yeager, Columbia, Missouri, and master woodworker Terry Evans, Overland Park, Kansas, will be featured artists at Bluestem during May.
"My art is about color, beauty and the joy I find in nature," says Juanita. "My medium is mixed media quilts. Trees and flowers are my favorite subjects; the circle my favorite shape. I prefer curved lines to straight ones and I like dense quilting. I find curved lines to be more soothing and harmonious, especially when my art is displayed in environments with straight hard-edge architectural shapes like those found in today’s homes and business environments."
Juanita was born and lived most of her life in Louisville, Kentucky. She now makes her home in Columbia with her daughter and two grandsons. She creates quilts in her home studio.
Evans woodwork also features vibrant colors and flowing lines. He creates an almost Technicolor effect by combining many different types and colors of woods into a single block that he then carves into shape. Terry saws, surfaces, and prepares all his own wood. He also harvests his own local woods.
Dedication to the environmentally responsible use of hardwoods leads Terry to seek out and promote species that are little known or under appreciated. On occasion he rescues timber otherwise destined for the landfill.
The colors in his work are natural. He does not apply surface color. "As people respond to my work," he says, "I am often struck by the fact that their first reaction is a smile. If I can create that, life is good."
