There's been a lot of controversy about nudes on the homepage lately. We are working on the problem, but I want you to understand how difficult it is.

Thought #1 - 'Lets just block everything in the 'nudes' section (which we already have by the way) from showing up.

But then we are blocking this:
http://www.boundlessgallery.com/art-piece/73666,Perdonare.art

and this:
http://www.boundlessgallery.com/art-piece/83602,Languid.art

or this:
http://www.boundlessgallery.com/art-piece/79729,nude-12.art

Is that what we are trying to prevent? Is that fair to those artists?

Thought #2 - Lets just create a 'mark this piece as adult' link.
So then what, anyone can have the power to block someone's work from showing up? What if some jerk just goes around blocking people for selfish reasons? Do we then have to block them?....

Thought #3 - Screen each and every piece already on boundless and each new one added.
Someone got the money for an extra salary lying around, because that would be a full time job...

SOOOOO.... My point is, it is not as easy as let's remove offensive images. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Luke,

What i just saw on the front page in the "Discover an Artist" category was beyond your basic nude photo or painting!
Classic nudes....been painted for years!!! I'm not against that, if tastefully done. The human body is beautiful, love to view beautiful images....but what i just viewed was tasteless, pornographic, left nothing to the imagination, close-up graphic shots of the actual act of FU#$*^&ing!!
Crap anyone can view on a porn site online!

It needs to state somewhere in BG contract that PORN can not be downloaded on this website!! Big difference from Porn, and classic nudes!

This was my comment earlier Luke:

"Yes, I agree with you on his intention Luke. I genuinely think HIS intention was to be humorous. My problem is, that some people like to lead and others to follow. What if this creates a certain following?"

I think, that like it or not YOU are the LEADER here. You and your team.
Leaders have it hard, because they make the difficult and unpopular decisions. But it is YOUR responsibility. Your responsibility to decide on what is 'family' viewing.

You have everyone's point of view, but at the end of the day you must be the responsible leader that everyone looks up to.

Cesar, I saw this painting that you are referring to this morning, and I have to agree with you. There is a big difference between tasteful nudes and porn.

Please everyone, cut and paste this sentence below, then send to 'contact us'. All concerned artist are doing this.

"We believe that Boundless Gallery should be a family friendly site and that pornographic images have no place on the front page or in general circulation within the site. "

I think part of the contract with artist should be that pornographic or otherwise disturbing images need to be labeled or categorized as such by the artist who uploads them, and therefore get listed directly in a separate category marked as "explicit" or "adult" (this category can also include images of violence or others that are considered offensive by some people, so the exact definition of what belongs in that category aught to be more specific - but always leave room for the consideration of BG staff). Before visitors enter this category and the listings in it - a warning can show. I don't think tasteful nudes need to be included in this category, and also, the definition of 'sexually arousing' isn't a sufficient parameter - some people find the bare foot a highly sexually arousing image!

To implement keeping the rules: add a flag button to each and every listing. To flag an item one needs to be signed in. All flagging will do is send the listing to your attention and you can use your discretion specifically, including reminding the user of the TOS, and if necessary (after several breaking of the rules) remove them from the site (which I don't think will be necessary, these are easy rules to keep). Having to sign in in order to flag is important because that way you can prevent any jerks from blocking everybody - you know who they are - they wouldn't do it, and if they do - not for long.

Simple enough, I think, in theory...

Now the code.... that's a different story, I know, I feel sorry for your programmers :)

oh, and btw, that flagging button is also good for monitoring fake art that we discussed before. Just enlist BG artists army to the aid, we're good soldiers, we'll help!

Beautiful Iris! I've been waiting for a great example of constructive criticism. And that is it!

As I mentioned in the other discussion we have actually already been working on almost the identical system you just mentioned since last week. Right after our programmer finished QuickEDIT that was his next project. You will see changes to the add/edit piece page soon, including an 'adult content' filter which will prevent it from showing at least on the homepage for now. We will also manually apply this filter to specific images as 'obscenity' is already a part of our terms. Just please just give our guys some time.

I think you have had lots of 'constructive criticism' Luke, it is wrong to imply you have not!
