Any input greatly appreciated, I've been hesitant to post some of my larger pieces, which it seems I've been focused on more lately (4'x4' up to 8 ft. pieces), smaller pieces I send fedex, and larger ones just keep and show locally. Just wanted input on carriers and crating methods that others use for shipping large pieces. Whether success with fedex, ups, or using freight companies.

I'm using UPS for large pieces..... You can call a UPS store and ask them for an estimate for shipping, so you will know how much to charge for shipping costs

I use FedEx Freight.....more reasonable than UPS and UPS has a cap on size. We use this ultra lightweight material from Home Depot. It is a type of insulation. But it is very strong. We put it on all sides and then a cardboard box. No damage in over 3 years of this method.

Thank you Sharon for the Home Depot idea. You're the best :)

I use DHL for shipping, I find them most reliable and least expensive. HOWEVER large pieces I ship ROLLED in a tube, it's the only way to go, all these companies won't ship beyond a certain size and freight is very expensive, shipping a piece may cost more than the price of the painting! I buy extendeable mailing tubes in 'The Container Store'

oops, didn't mean to hit send yet.... container store - they have locations in many states, look online. I prepare the way-bill online, always saves time.

Sharon, isn't it very expensive to ship freight? I just looked at the FedEx quotes online and it was over $500 for a big piece...

Iris...I dont sell my oversized stretched canvas for cheap. The most expensive freight charge I ever had was a 4 ft x 8 ft stretched piece to Nevada. It was just under 400.00. But they bought two canvases for 3000 each. So the 400 was no big deal. For my prices on the biggies, the freight is fine with most people. I get really good rates because of the volume I ship. If you get an account with FedEx you will get better rates than what is posted on the website.

Thanks for all the replies, it really helps. Great idea Sharon on the insulated sheathing with cardboard overlay, I was pondering simple crates with hardboard (tempered masonite), but I like the insulation board idea.

I think the stuff we use is about 25.00 a sheet, but it is very large at like 4 ft x 6 ft. It goes a long way.
