Hi Guys, I was taking a look at the artist showcase today (to see how my cropped works looked and so forth) and was wondering something.
Mostly the work is by people like myself, who have tried to do the best photos for their works and are putting their best works up. but there are some with really poor photos taken with flashes or the odd advertising banner. Is there some kind of Jurying Process? if not.. should there be? less than ideal photographs or images make it look a little cheap. less gallery and more eBay.
a daily limit and a jury to make sure that the best work goes up might yield more results.. and speaking of results.. is there a possibility in the future of ongoing stats for the showcase? so we can monitor how it's going, what days seem to be best and so forth..

Sorry if that seemed a little harsh or something - it's just that it's the front page! The majority are the usual high standard you see around here!
another thing I remembered was the category showcase - which sounds great but when I tried it the other day is wasn't working. it kept bouncing back telling me to reselect dates in the future (these dates were over 1 wk into the future - I triple checked) |

I agree Jennie that having poorly photographed work on the home page makes the site look bad. It is a pay service, so being juried in doesnt make any sense. However, it might be wise for BG to find a way to make sure only good quality photos are displayed. |

This is a very delicate subject. The intention of the showcase is to give everyone a fair shot at being on the homepage. While we certainly prefer quality images to be displayed, I'm not sure if we could come up with a great solution. We only have so many man hours available, everything done manually, limits our ability to do other projects. To reject or refund someone because of their photos is not an easy task, and not one Im sure we'd even do if it was easier. So, long story-short, I don't anticipate us changing it soon. |

seems like there's a problem with the category showcase (painting). At least on my computer - the display isn't rotating. the only way the works are switched is refreshing the page.... the front page showcase works fine.... what is the problem?
Jennie, this may have to do with why you wasn't able to use the service.

I reported the bug to customer service. |

I completely understand your dilemma here Luke and I certainly don't want to sound like a dissenting voice - but maybe a neatly worded message when it's confirmed that only the very best photographs of actual works should go in - no banners, no walls showing. maybe make it clear that it's just a small crop and that any extra would not come across well on the page... I don't know, it's a hard topic and a delicate one!
I know there is some code out there to check if the image is centered right and to select and crop the key topic of a picture but I can't remember what it is called.
lol Iris- Yeah, customer service! I remember them.. they're the people I bugged before this came along! ;) |

A properly worded message sounds like a good idea :)
Although you artists tend to skip text ;) |

but we write so much text how could we not read it! ;) it's true our brains are cluttered up wth images - maybe a surreal painting that communicates the loss associated with bad photography and banners.. :P it's great to hear the category showcase has been fixed! I might pop a bit in there as well. |
