Hello there,
I hope this topic is not too mundane, and that more people will be helped by it. I am in the market for a good printer that will do photos as well as print on other media. What has your experience been with printers? Share what you know about inks, archival quality, what to look out for, brands, pricing, etc. Also, what have you found to be the best way to mail prints?

Hi Jitske--

There was a discussion a couple months back about printers (I can't recall which group.) Sharon and Elizabeth had some great input on their printer experiences.
I recently purchased the Epson R2400, based on that discussion and my particular needs. So far, I am in love with it. It was an investment, certainly, but there are things you can do to alleviate costs. In my case, knowing exactly what I wanted, I purchased it on Amazon.com for a fairly low cost, no tax, and free shipping--and I still got it in 3 days!

Thanks Catherine, I am looking at the Epson 2400 as my number 1 pick. Momoko, I'm going to check out that link.
Any more input from a fellow BGer would be great!

Jitske,

Hey, to validate Catherine's option, I agree! I have the 2400 and I'm very impressed with the quality of both fine art prints on nice paper and my photography on glossy or satin paper. Very easy set-up, use, and awesome quality. A good choice in my opinion. Good Luck!

Thanks Elizabeth,
good to hear another positive endorsement of Epson 2400.

As an aside, anyone want to comment on papers they use?
Again Thanks.

So far I have only used the Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster (based on Elizabeth's advice.) I tend to prefer a matte finish, and for a glossy paper this finish leans toward being more matte-like, in my opinion. But it still has a nice sheen to it.

I really like the lustre, too. It's recommended as one of the top choice in photo papers. Now for my oil reproductions I chose the Velvet Paper, a soft cotton rag texture. It reminds me of the nice watercolor papers one can by, but with cotton in it, so it gives off the "velvety" feel as it's titled. I haven't experimented with any others.

Hello everyone,
I have the Epson R2400, and papers on order! Thanks for the input, it made the decision process easier. In the meantime I have started uploading some Abstract Photos as Art images. Will need to tweek a bit I'm sure, but at least it is a start and I'm very excited! You know where you can find them!

Congratulations, Jitske! And try not to become too addicted. It is so very easy to become a printing fiend ;o)
