Laurel.....I watermarked EVERYTHING for a year on eBay. But anyone with even minimal skill on PS can get rid of it. I had another artist tell me how they got rid of one pixel by pixel just to see if it could be done. It can. And get this. The Chinese rip-off artists blow up your piece with the watermark and then just paint over those spots.
I tell everyone this: If you DO NOT want your work ripped off in any way....DO NOT SELL ONLINE.
I wish there were a full-proof protection. But there is not.
People on My Space use my paintings as background ALL of the time and my SIGNED name is clearly visible.
When I find them, I dont get mad, I just ask them to credit me and they do.
I spent soooooo much energy trying to fight this copyright issue that it nearly killed me. So I just dont worry about it anymore. If I have a piece that I dont want copied ever, I dont list it.

Thank you for sharing Sharon, your story is very touching! you are very brave to have gone this far, and I salute you! I am surprised to hear there were so many who were jealous of you... I always thought in this country success is being celebrated and becoming successful makes people admire you, not hate you.... but I suppose it's human nature, even here... I wish you more success and prosperity in your future!
It seems like your formula of success includes: drive determination talent support luck! indeed, a very potent formula! we may not all possess all the ingredients to fit this formula, to reach that goal.... but it certainly is inspiring! thank you again for sharing! |

Laurel, who is that artist you are referring to? I'm very curious.... there were many famous ones with mental problems. Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Rothko, Francis Bacon, pop into my mind, but there are many, many more... some were lucky to become known and successful in their lifetime, in spite of their problems, but success didn't do much for their happiness - they finally took their own lives.
I agree with Sharon regarding the watermark.... anyone with very basic skills can get rid of it easily. I know, I can too. One cautious step I'm using, and I don't know why I'm doing it, but ever since I started on line I have, is photo my paintings before signing. This way as least my signature isn't on the net, only those who purchase get to see it. Don't know if that's really important though.
Is Yan a man? why did I always think of Yan as a woman??? |

Great to hear you watermarked everything Sharon. It works for me because I tend to concentrate on small and detailed work. It would be a real pain for most people to try and duplicate that. I think the bigger the painting and the more abstract the easier to remove the watermark.
Yes, I ask people to credit my work if they use it too. Most people are very nice about it.
Iris, when did I mention a painter? I don't know what you are refering too? Have I forgotten something I've written?? :) Laurel.
With a watermark software, you can even tile all over the piece if you want. But I guess it's a fine line between protection and ruining the image for potential customers. |

I also think that having the watermark also acts as a serious reminder or warning to the majority, which is usually enough to warn most people off trying to copy illegally.

No probs Iris, I was a bit worried I was going insane for a moment there. Ironically, the nearest I had to a Van Gogh moment was slicing my painting finger with a vegetable slicer, about 3 months ago in fact. I have a once inch scar on that finger now, which reminds me of a slice of carrot!! Luckily, it wasn't deep, I was worried I wouldn't be able to paint for a while. But my healing powers have surprised me.
I call it my magic finger now. And think maybe it has magic powers!!!! |

and btw, there are many free watermark software on the net. search around. I use one on my website, I watermark my images there (but not in other places I post paintings, I can't be bothered). Although the one I'm using is not really a specifically watermarking program, it generates a gallery and watermark is just one of it's functions, so it's a bit of a pain to use if you only need watermarking. that's why I don't bother, and also because I know how easy it is to get rid of the mark. |

My point was that Watermarking did not work AT ALL for me. It didnt stop the creeps. So a waste of my time. And there is no need to "buy" a program if you have PS. You can do it on there very easily.
Bottom line...if it makes you feel better to Watermark....the do it. |
