Christine, A lot of mediums dry in differing sheens...including Liquin. Some wait for a number of month and varnish. You can also us the Liquin in a finish coat of painting flourish...in a thinner application.......and that seems to cut down considerably on the problem.

All oil paints from what I have read dry darker then when painted, so you always need to think about those things, is that the color change you mean? |

Acrylic dries to fast for my taste, I do use liquin all the time though and don't have a discoloring problem? Christine what liquin are you using? I use Liquin Original. |

Is it really necessary to varnish an oil painting when complete. There are so many choices out there, what is the best one to use, taking into account yellowing or browning etc. |

Hi everyone, Janeice I have a question about the liquin-
When I have used it I found it dried in different sheens and looked awful. Do you have any suggestion to avoid to this?

Ya Janeice that oil technique is the one I prefure. The work can come out so illuminating, it's just wonderful. I also like to try and show the layers a little, giving it a real painterly feel. |

Oil and Acrylic paints. I have painted in both for a long time.
I also have allergies, but have learned to paint with oil in a fashion that does not bother me. I use Rembrandt oils with Oderless Turpenoid..and then use the medium Liquin. If you paint thin instead of thick......it will dry "to touch" in a day or two. The only thing about painting thin is that you MUST know exactly what you are trying to acheive.....so as not to muddy the colors. Also I start painting with transparents in the beginning, mixing my colors all along the way. I love the "quality of paint" that this all gives.
Acrylics.......are a much different procedure. With them you can utilize all those exotic techniques like a watercolorist uses or you can approach it like a classical oil painter. Experiments in Acrylic can go on forever. I generally used acrylic when I am experimenting. And acrylics can acheive either a watercolor look OR an oil look.
Oils are best for outdoor painting. They pack small, and do a mighty job........And this is a good way for those who are affected by Oil fumes, to get familiar. In the classroom, people frequently overuse the thinner amounts and types and thus the fumes.
Acrylics for landscapes en plein aire, are a bit tough to control because of the quick drying.

Thankyou Momoko for your advice to get the brush cleaner...i got Lowe Cornell acrylic brush cleaner and i am using it ...my brush looks clean now:) |

i agree with you Iris....i love oil too...but we have ventilation problem here due to the cold weather...drying is also a major issue....acrylics has these advantages....and i have not used any medium in acrylics yet...it is making me feel good....lets see!! |
