That is unfortunately one of the biggest challenges within animal conservation these days: human/animal conflict. As humans use and/or remove more and more land space from animals--sometimes cutting off natural migratory routes and cutting off water sources--the animals are forced to search for alternatives and/or inhabit much smaller areas, thus forcing more and more "negative" interactions with people. It has always been amazing to me how some areas in Africa have too many elephants whereas in other areas of Africa elephants are scarce or non-existent. The idea of culling is abhorrant to most, yet the options for dealing with an over-population of thousands of elephants are limited when considering practicality and resources for those areas confronted with this issue. But of course I am rambling to the choir here :o) |

It mustve been very exciting for you Catherine. Ive yet to see an Asian elephant other than on TV, they are smaller and 'cuter' than the African elephant. In the Kruger Park they are about to cull about 4000 elephants as they cause a lot of damage to the park and uplift trees etc. By doing this they cut down on food resources for the rest of the game. They will be killing whole herds from young to old. As the elephants live in family groups, they wipe the whole group out. Its very sad and apparently a terrible thing to see. |

I spent many years involved in animal management and conservation, working with black rhino, Nile hippos and Asian (sorry, not African!) elephants. I imagine the thrill of encountering these animals out and about in the midst of their habitats to be beyond words...How incredible! |

I went to the Kruger National Park today, was totally inspired by the environment and of course the animals, saw the BIG FIVE in one day, lady luck must have been smiling down on me as this does not simply happen when you go on your own steam (without helpers). Also saw three wild dog, very endangered species. Needless to say there were a lot of tourists from all over the world, enjoying themselves. |

Closeness to nature and animals in African Arts is admirable. |
