Right now I am fighting to get back five of my paintings from an art dealer who has been playing games with me. I will have to claim a law suit against him.
The problem with "art dealers" is that anyone can claim to be an art dealer. All the art dealers I had met have shady lifestyles. I guess I never learn a lesson and try trusting one more person after being deceived by others.
I have come to a point where I no longer work with anyone who lacks respect to artists.
It is like any other business, Read "Making a Living as an Artist". There are wonderful recomendations and contract suggestions. Like with realestate, you need inventory signed off and price lists and contracts. Also to personally check out the gallery (dealer) and the reputation before releasing any of your baby's.
No matter how careful you are, I am sure sometimes stuff happens.
If they will not sign inventory sheets, value sheets and contracts. But have alot of promises don't do business with them.
I'm sure there are good art dealers out there. But, like a good car dealer, they are hard to find. I'm a little leery of trusting someone else with the responsibility of selling my artwork. I'd rather do that myself. This may limit my avenues for exposure and possible sales, however, I may save time, energy and money - in the long run (no legal issues to deal with). Trust is hugh here. I admire anyone who takes an extended risk. MOMOKO, sorry to hear about your situation and hope everything works out.
