This is a question of whether there is a finish, or if the art work is always changing it's message. Does the Artist control it? Is it ever out of his control?

I don't think the artist controls the message, or how other people see it.... art is a way of communication, just like words are: I say one word, but this word can have different associations and meanings for you. we try the best we can to convey our meaning, but we have no control whether others 'get it' the same way we meant it. On the whole, though, art IS a way of communication, and sometimes even, others understand what we meant better than we did, for example, we may talk about the weather, but others will hear the tone of our voice and conclude we are feeling sad or happy at that moment, even though we didn't speak about the way we feel. Same way in our paintings, we may paint a house, but whoever sees the painting may think and feel 'loneliness' or 'safety' when they see it, even if we didn't mean to express it, it is what we subconsciously projected. That's one thing that is so great about art, and an art work is finished when we decide it is!

I feel it's always in an unfinished state. The viewer holds it in his memory and it lives on in his soul. The work of the artist is to constantly improve on the content of the message, deciding whether to make it vague or clear, to the point or obscure.
