Artists ofter donate a piece to charity in exchange for the publicity. Has anyone had luck with this. And would you do it again?

I can only partly answer your question Janeice. I donate handful of paintings and a ton of prints every year to "Mended Little Hearts", "Great Dane Rescue", "Critter Crossings" and my daughter's school. I do charity blog auctions on My Space.

I never donate with the thought of the publicity it will bring me. I honestly give so that heart patients can get the extra help they need, so rescue dogs can get the veterinary care they need, etc. In my heart I do not think of "what is in it for me". This didnt come naturally I will say. I had to work on myself, but now it is second nature. "What can I do for you?" is now how I view it.

And as a result of this I do make sales when I run charity auctions and the like. But I dont seek them.

Sharon, just curious, when you donate an original painting for charity, do they let you know what it sold for eventually? or - do you care to know? is it important to you?

Sharon and Iris, Thanks for answering. Once you start this routine, the public is after more and more. How do you keep it under controll? Do you limit the number of items going out for the year. And do you keep it in the Print category....?
That of course would be different than an Original.

I dont care to know. And I dont write them off on my tax return. I honestly do look at them as a gift to the charity. Maybe not the best business practice, but it feels good. :)

I have selected the 4 charities I give to and when others ask, I tell them the four I support and that I unfortunately cannot give to everyone. I wish them blessings and move on.

Thanks Sharon for replying. The reason I ask is because I gave a painting to a local fund raising silent auction last year, and just out of curiosity asked the board how much they got for it, just to know if my donation was actually helpful. They didn't want to tell me and I got upset by it and couldn't understand what's the big deal and why wouldn't they want to let me know.... so this year I'm considering only giving prints on paper and not an original, if I don't know what good it will do whats the point, do you understand?

When donating art it is better you do it to organizations that you know very well. Some charities simply take advantage of artists. I know a well known artist who once donated to a charity and what happened was the person who picked up the artwork disappeared with it because this artist's work is on high demand. Last year I co-chaired a silent auction. I asked artists if they want their artwork returned to them if not sold. The organization (with 54 full time employees) spends all money to help those who need help and they don't have money to buy wall decorations. So I gave them the option of getting donated items returned to them OR donate to the organization's office so they can use them as wall deco.

One should evaluate the non-profit organization and fully understand what they do to the community. Know the people who are running the operation of the charity. Donate to the organization that you concluded that they are doing good service to your community. Is the compassion genuine?

Usually the items that didn't sell will return to the donors.
